Perth, Western Australia - Affordable Interlock Systems (AIS), a leading provider of life-saving alcohol interlock technology, has officially announced its expansion into the Western Australian market.
The launch comes at a critical juncture as the state grapples with the third-highest road toll rate in the country, trailing only the Northern Territory and Tasmania.
Founded by Ron Mulder, a former Royal Australian Air Force Engineer, AIS enters Western Australia with a mission to curb preventable road trauma.
"Western Australia’s vast regional corridors present a unique set of safety challenges," said Mr Mulder.
"By establishing a local presence now, we are providing the critical interlock support needed to manage the 'Fatal Five,' with a specific focus on eliminating impaired driving during one of Australia’s deadliest windows on the road."
The expansion of AIS into WA provides essential infrastructure for participants in the Western Australian Alcohol Interlock Scheme (WAAIS).
Under WA law, an alcohol interlock - a breath-testing device connected to a vehicle's ignition - is mandatory for certain drink-driving offenders to regain their driving privileges.
Specific triggers for the WAAIS include:
- High-level offences: Driving with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.15 or above.
- Repeat offences: A second drink-driving offence of any kind within a five-year period.
- Serious incidents: Failing to provide a breath sample or causing bodily harm while under the influence.
Participants must have an interlock fitted by an accredited provider, such as AIS, for a minimum period (usually six months) and must demonstrate "clean" breath test results to successfully graduate from the scheme.
Contrary to common misconceptions, Mr Mulder notes that the profile of those requiring interlocks is often far from the "stereotypical" offender.
"Approximately 95 per cent of our users are everyday professionals; doctors, nurses, and parents, who made a single poor decision, often under the weight of holiday stress," Mulder explained. "Our role isn't just about the technology; it’s about providing a pathway for these people to safely reintegrate into the workforce and their communities while ensuring every other driver on the road is protected."
AIS is deploying its cutting-edge calibration technology across its new Western Australian service centres. This advanced system minimises the risk of device error and ensures that the 1,336 Australians lost annually to road trauma (as recorded in the 12 months to February 2026) does not continue to climb.
AIS stands ready to support the WA Department of Transport and local drivers in helping to combat "The Fatal Five," a thing of the past.
