What is this page? This is a high-level overview of the WA Alcohol Interlock Program. It is not a substitute for the official government information. For full legislative detail please visit the DoT WA Alcohol Interlock Scheme page.

What is the WA Alcohol Interlock Program?

The Western Australia Alcohol Interlock Program is administered by the Department of Transport (DoT) and managed by the Magistrates Court. If you have been convicted of a drink-driving offence, the Court may order — or you may be required — to install an approved alcohol interlock device in your vehicle before your licence is returned.

The purpose of the program is to allow you to drive again while ensuring that you are not driving with alcohol in your system. Participation demonstrates your commitment to safe driving and is a condition of reinstating your licence.

Administering Body

Department of Transport (DoT WA) & Magistrates Court of WA

Who Must Participate

Drink-driving offenders as ordered by the Court or required under the Road Traffic (Administration) Act 2008

Interlock Period

Varies based on offence severity — typically 6 months to 3 years, or as directed by the Court

Device Costs

Costs are borne by the participant — installation, monthly rental, and removal fees apply

Five Steps from Conviction to Completion

  1. 1
Court Order / DoT Requirement — Following conviction, the Court issues an interlock order or DoT notifies you of a mandatory interlock requirement. You will receive written confirmation of your interlock period.
  2. 2
Select an Approved Provider — You must use a DoT-approved interlock supplier. Contact them to arrange installation at an authorised fitting centre.
  3. 3
Interlock Licence Issued — Once your interlock is installed and registered with DoT, you are issued an interlock licence which permits you to drive only vehicles fitted with an approved device.
  4. 4
Regular Monitoring & Servicing — Your device stores breath-test data. You must attend scheduled service appointments (typically every 30–60 days) so that data can be downloaded and reviewed.
  5. 5
Completion & Licence Reinstatement — At the end of your interlock period, provided your compliance record is satisfactory, the device is removed and your standard licence is reinstated by DoT.

What You Must Do as a Program Participant

  • You must only drive vehicles fitted with an approved interlock device during your order period.
  • You are responsible for all costs — installation, monthly monitoring, and removal.
  • The device requires a breath sample before the engine will start. A BAC reading above the set limit will prevent the vehicle from starting.
  • Random rolling retests are required while driving — you must provide a sample when prompted.
  • Tampering with, bypassing, or having someone else provide a breath sample is a serious offence.
  • Any breaches (failed tests, missed services) will be reported to DoT and may extend your interlock period or result in further action.
  • You must notify your interlock provider if you change vehicles during the program.
⚠️ Hardship Provisions: If you believe the cost of the program creates genuine financial hardship, contact the Department of Transport. Information about the Reduced Fee Scheme may be available — speak to DoT or your provider for details.

Not All Providers Are Equal — Choose Wisely

Only DoT-approved suppliers can install and service an interlock device as part of the WA program. While there are several approved providers to choose from, not all interlock devices — or the companies behind them — are equal. The provider you choose will affect your day-to-day experience for the entire duration of your order, so it pays to choose wisely.
