Gold Coast, Queensland - Road safety advocate, Affordable Interlock Systems founder Ron Mulder, is putting out an urgent call to revellers across Australia to not get behind the wheel if they have been drinking as part of Melbourne Cup celebrations.
With a Queensland survey recently reporting the highest number of drivers admitting to drink driving since it began, Mr Mulder fears that national attitudes towards road safety may be ‘loosening,’ post-COVID - a period when Random Breathlysers were not as prevalent.
If this is true and with consumption still a leading cause of fatal crashes Mr Mulder is imploring drivers to not drink and drive; no matter what the circumstances may be.
“Melbourne Cup is one of the largest celebrations in the country with parties both within and outside of Victoria and drinking is part and parcel of this day,” said Mr Mulder.
“This is why I implore revellers to not get behind the wheel under any circumstances if they’ve been drinking; it’s never okay to drive if you’ve had a few drinks. A concern for me is anecdotally I feel that post-COVID, people have started taking a few more risks as random police breath tests were not as prevalent for close to two years - I feel that this change in attitude may be reflecting in the recent Queensland survey by RACQ and be part of a broader national trend.”
One of Australia’s leading road safety and vehicle security technology providers of alcohol interlock systems for private and commercial use, Affordable Interlock Systems (AIS) is continuing its national expansion as it adds Western Australia to the list of states it operates in.
This move into Western Australia follows its success in consolidating its footprint in the New South Wales and Queensland markets with growth driven by continuing demand for its core offering of alcohol interlock devices, a technology crucial to the prevention of drink-driving either in a personal or work capacity.
AIS distributes its range of innovative and life-saving products to auto-electrical service centres across the country via its partnership with UltraTune, Bridgestone, Autospark, along with many independently operated providers due to its range of government accredited products and customisable applications covering both industry and personal requirements.
Alcohol interlock systems and roadside enforcement programs have proven effective in reducing recidivism among high-risk drivers, but Mr Mulder believes that the RACQ results show a broader cultural issue that education, community awareness, and personal responsibility must also address.
“Enforcement is a critical component of deterring drink driving, but we must ask ourselves why that in an era where it is so easy to access transportation attitudes appear to be loosening,” Mr Mulder said.
