📋Program Overview

What is the QLD Alcohol Ignition Interlock Program?

The Queensland Alcohol Ignition Interlock Program is administered by Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and applies to drivers convicted of high-risk drink driving offences. If convicted, you are required to have an approved interlock device installed in your nominated vehicle for a minimum of 12 months after your disqualification period ends.

The program is performance-based — your interlock data is monitored throughout. If your data shows alcohol use or missed services, your time in the program will be extended. Choosing not to participate means you cannot drive for 5 years from the end of your disqualification.

Administering Body

Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Queensland

Who Must Participate

Drivers convicted of high-risk drink driving offences including BAC 0.10+, repeat offences within 5 years, refusing a breath test, or dangerous driving while affected by alcohol

Interlock Period

Minimum 12 months (8-month learning period + 4-month performance period). Extended if alcohol is detected or services are missed.

Program Costs

Approximately $2,600 per year (estimate only). A 35% concession is available for Healthcare Card and Pensioner Concession Card holders.

⚙️How the Program Works

Three Steps to Get Back on the Road

  1. 1
Wait for Your Disqualification to End — You can apply for your licence the day after your disqualification ends (or the date a court grants you a restricted work licence). You may also need to complete a drink driving short course before applying.
  2. 2
Apply for Your Licence with an Interlock Condition — Visit a Transport and Motoring customer service centre, participating QGAP office, or licence-issuing police station (in rural/remote areas). Bring your evidence of identity and pay the interlock condition fee plus the licence fee. You will be issued a probationary licence with code 'I'.
  3. 3
Get Your Interlock Installed — Contact an approved Queensland interlock provider and arrange installation. You cannot drive the vehicle to the installation — arrange someone else to drive it. Your time in the program begins once your licence is current and the interlock is installed in your nominated vehicle.

The Performance-Based Program

The QLD program has two stages. During the learning period (first 8 months) you must provide all breath tests and attend all services. During the performance period (final 4 months) your data is closely monitored — any alcohol detection or missed service appointment will restart the 4-month performance period and extend your time in the program.

You must get your interlock serviced 1 month after installation, then every 3 months during the program. Missing a service by even one day will trigger a permanent lockout of your vehicle.

Key Requirements & Conditions

What You Must Do as a Program Participant

  • A zero alcohol limit applies at all times — any alcohol detected will prevent the vehicle from starting and will be recorded and reported to TMR.
  • You may only drive vehicles you have nominated with an interlock installed.
  • The interlock takes a photo each time you provide a breath sample — ensure the camera has a clear view of your face.
  • Random rolling retests are required while driving. Pull over safely when prompted.
  • Attend all scheduled service appointments — missing a service causes a permanent lockout and restarts your performance period.
  • In the 15 minutes before providing a breath sample, do not eat, drink (except water), smoke, vape, use hand sanitiser, perfume, or aerosol sprays.
  • Tampering with or bypassing the interlock is a serious offence. Other people driving your vehicle must also pass the breath test.
  • Do not remove the device before receiving a program completion notice from TMR.
⚠️ Financial Assistance: If you hold a valid Australian Government Healthcare Card or Pensioner Concession Card, your interlock provider will give you a 35% discount on interlock costs. Additional financial hardship assistance may also be available — contact TMR or your provider for details.

🏢Choosing Your Approved Interlock Provider

Not All Providers Are Equal — Choose Wisely

Only Queensland-approved interlock providers can install and service your device. There are different types of interlocks available and the way they operate can differ significantly. TMR recommends checking with each provider before deciding. The provider you choose will affect your day-to-day experience for the entire duration of your program — so it pays to choose wisely.
