📋Program Overview

What is the NSW Alcohol Interlock Program?

The NSW Mandatory Alcohol Interlock Program is administered by Transport for NSW and applies to drivers convicted of mid-range, high-range, repeat, and other serious drink-driving offences. If you have been convicted of a qualifying offence, the Court must make an interlock order requiring you to drive only vehicles fitted with an approved interlock device for a set period after your licence disqualification ends.

The program is designed to ensure offenders separate their drinking from their driving and do not re-offend. Participation is mandatory — you cannot opt out based on living in a regional or remote area.

Administering Body

Transport for NSW & Service NSW

Who Must Participate

Drivers convicted of mid-range, high-range, repeat or other serious drink-driving offences in NSW

Interlock Period

Minimum 12 months (first offence) up to 48 months for serious or repeat offences, as ordered by the Court

Program Costs

Estimated $2,200–$2,500 per year plus a $200 administration fee. Concession rates and hardship assistance available.

⚙️How the Program Works

Five Steps from Conviction to Completion

  1. 1
Confirm Your Eligibility — After your disqualification period ends, call Service NSW on 13 22 13 to confirm you are eligible for an interlock licence and have no outstanding suspensions or fines (Revenue NSW: 1300 655 805).
  2. 2
Complete Your Medical Consultation — Book an appointment with your GP to complete the Medical Consultation Certificate, included in the eligibility pack sent to you by Transport for NSW.
  3. 3
Install Your Interlock Device — Choose an accredited NSW interlock provider and have the device installed. The provider will explain how to use it. You cannot drive your vehicle until this is done.
  4. 4
Apply for Your Interlock Licence — Visit a Service NSW centre in person with your Medical Consultation Certificate, Interlock Installation Certificate, and the letter from Transport for NSW. Pay the $200 administration fee.
  5. 5
Complete the Program & Have Device Removed — Once Transport for NSW advises you have met all requirements, visit a Service NSW centre for a standard licence, then have your provider remove the device.

Key Requirements & Conditions

What You Must Do as a Program Participant

  • A zero BAC (blood alcohol concentration) applies at all times — any alcohol detected will prevent the vehicle from starting and be recorded.
  • The device takes a photo of you every time you use it — ensure a clear view and remove hats and sunglasses.
  • Random rolling retests are required while driving — find a safe place to pull over within 10 minutes when prompted.
  • The device must be serviced every 30 or 60 days (or 90 days if you live remotely). Missing a service by more than 7 days will lock you out of your vehicle.
  • Avoid hand sanitiser for 10 minutes, and mouthwash or cough syrup for 15 minutes, before using the device.
  • It is a serious offence for another person to provide a breath sample to start the vehicle on your behalf.
  • If your interlock licence becomes inactive for any reason, that time does not count towards your interlock period.
⚠️ Financial Hardship Assistance: If you are experiencing financial hardship, Transport for NSW can refer you to The Salvation Army (accredited assessment agency) on 02 8775 7951 or [email protected]. A 35% concession is also available for eligible Pensioner Concession, Low Income Health Care, and DVA Gold Card holders.
